Center for Research in Sports Administration

CfP Workshop Sports History

We are happy to announce that the Sports History Cluster of the Center for Research in Sports Administration (CRSA) at the University of Zurich is organizing a workshop next September.

Ulrich Woitek and Christian Koller would be delighted if you would consider giving a presentation. And, of course, you are welcome to distribute the CfP.

Date: September 5–6, 2024 The workshop is organized by the “Sports History: Economics and Politics” cluster of the Center for Research in Sports Administration (CRSA) at the University of Zurich. While research in sports history is mainly focused on cultural dimensions, we want to look at economic and political aspects. The importance of these dimensions is obvious for big international events such as the modern Olympic Games. But economics and politics play also a more general role as determinants of sports activities, and, vice versa, sports activities have an economic and sometimes arguably also a political impact, not only in terms of the big events. Sports activities create a wealth of quantitative data, texts, and audiovisual material, also in the historical context, which allows us to analyse questions about their entanglement with economics and politics and compare current trends to developments in the past.

Contributions from history, sociology, economics and other fields interested in these issues are welcome. Please send your short proposals to ulrich.woitek@econ.uzh.ch and chkoller@hist.uzh.ch by February 29, 2024. Financial support (travel, accommodation) is not available.

Conference languages: English/French/German
